Scope and Contents

8 pp. on 2 folding sheets (with early repairs), 4to. New Haven, Novr. 30th 1772. Trumbull, 22 years old, wrote this letter to Sarah Lloyd (age 19) of a prominent New York family. He writes at length and at times flirtatiously about poetry, relations between the sexes and the art of writing. He asks for some lines of verse from Miss Lloyd, and mentions some of his friends, including Mr. [Timothy] Dwight, a fellow Hartford wit. Lloyd eventually married James Hillhouse, future US Congressman and Senator. She died in childbirth at age 26. This is the second oldest Trumbull letter known.
