Scope and Contents

This collection contains primarily bills and correspondences from booksellers related to Ostrom Enders' (1902-1994) purchases in the field of ornithology. The bills and correspondence span the later half of the 20th century, primarily the 1960s-1980 when Enders retired and took up the study of ornithology. The vast majority of the correspondence deal with purchases, and come from booksellers such as Antiquariaat Junk and Bow Windows Bookshop.

Biographical / Historical

Ostrom Enders (1902-1994) graduated from Yale University and went on to work at Hartford National Bank in 1925. Enders eventually became president and chairman of the board beginning in a position as teller in the bank. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and returned to Hartford National Bank to serve as president where he worked to eliminate racial barriers in the bank's career training programs. Enders also developed branch banking, and was active in numerous other instutitions including Aetna Life Insurance Co., the Aetna Casualty and Surety Co., the United Aircraft Corp., Northeast Utilities, the Torrington Co., the Hartford Steam Boiler Co., the Automobile Insurance Co., the Society for Savings, and Colt Manufacturing Co. He was a trustee of Hartford Hospital, and the Institute of Living, and was a life trustee of Trinity College. He helped found the Farmington Valley Polo Club in the 1930s, and played on its polo team for a number of years.

Furthermore, Enders was an avid hunter and troutbrook and salmon fisherman, and developed an extensive breeding program for rare bird species at his home in Avon, Connecticut after his retirement in 1967. Enders collected old and rare ornithological books which he donated to the Watkinson Library at Trinity College.

There are two series in the collection: Series I: Bills and Correspondence and Series II: Miscellaneous Correspondence. Series I is arranged alphabetically by bookseller or correspondent.
