Italy - Developments Dating From Armistice Negotiations | Italian Section - SI - Office of Strategic Services, 1944

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 8

Scope and Contents

-Correspondence: Typed, 9 pages (5 are photostatic copy), July 31, 1944. Package of documents including introduction to and translation of a July 2, 1944 letter in Italian from Italian Prime Minister Ivanoe Bonomi to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Compiled and introduced by OSS Director Earl Brennan. Letter included in photostatic copy form only. It is related to earlier communication between Marshal Pietro Badoglio (former Prime Minister) and Roosevelt. Transmission facilitated on the Italian side by Scamporino. Reference is made to an attached report by the Italian government which may or may not be related to the following item.

-Report: Typed, one page, “Pro Memoria Italian Affairs”. Cover sheet for a report on Italian affairs since the fall of Mussolini, prepared by the Italian Foreign Office for then-Prime Minister Badoglio. Clearly related to preceding correspondence, unclear if related to following report or not; actual report it accompanied may be lost.

-Report: Typed, 17 pages. Missing page numbered “1”, therefore author and title unknown. Most likely, this report is not “Pro Memoria Italian Affairs” as described in the preceding item. Seems to be OSS internal report on actions of “fruit teams” in Italy, May-June 1944.

-Report: Typed, 96 pages, “Italy: Developments Dating From Armistice Negotiations”, June 12, 1944. Extensive report compiled by OSS Italian Section SI detailing the situation in Italy since the September 3, 1943 Armistice of Cassibile between Italy and Allied forces.
