Biographical / Historical
Vincent James Scamporino was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on September 26, 1908. He attended the University of New Hampshire and obtained a law degree from Boston University Law School in 1934.
As an established lawyer at the time of World War II, he voluntarily sought to aid the war effort in a civilian position with the Department of the Army in 1942. Initially turned down amidst an overwhelming amount of similar applications, Scamporino was eventually accepted into the OSS and served from 1943 to 1945. He was chief of Italian Secret Intelligence (S.I.) operations by the war’s end, having served first in Italian-held North Africa and then Italy proper as the Allies advanced.
Scamporino was later awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Truman and the Lateran Cross by the Vatican. He settled in Middletown, CT and served briefly as a municipal court judge before serving many years as State’s Attorney for Middlesex County. He retired in 1973 and died the following year at 65.
