Abstract
This collection of photographs was acquired between 2005-2015 by George Stephanopoulos, the prominent journalist, political commentator, and former Democratic campaign advisor to Bill Clinton in 1992. The collection includes photographs by prominent photographers from the United States and Europe, as well as 19th century Italy. Stephanopoulos collected political photographs from a range of photographers: from Burt Glinn, who covered national politics during the 1950s and 1960s; to international politics, such as those of political activism and agitation in Spain by socialists and neo-fascists, as captured in Leonard Freed's works. Stephanopoulos also collected works by other internationally renowned photographers including Dmitri Baltermants, who photographed communist leaders in Russia and East Asia; as well as Ilse Bing, a German photographer who pioneered monochromatic images during the Interwar Period.
George Stephanopoulos also collected the works of 19th century photographers depicting the streets of Rome, Florence, and other parts of Italy, as well as other 20th century photographers including Max Baur, Jacques Lowe, and Danny Lyon.
