Biographical / Historical
Mandel Elihu Slater (1936-2009) was a research chemist and patent attorney. After graduating as the valedictorian of Hall High School in West Hartford, Connecticut, Slater entered Trinity College with the Class of 1957. In that year, he graduated from Trinity with honors in chemistry and physics. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Brownell Club. Then, Slater studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during 1957-1958 and later at Harvard during the fall of 1958. He later received a Masters of Science degree from Northeastern University and a J.D. from Suffolk University.
For over three decades, Slater worked for the Gillette Company, first as a research chemist and then as a patent attorney. He lived in Randolph, Massachusetts. Retiring in 1991, he continued on in private legal practice. Slater was active in volunteer and professional organizations, notably the Boston Patent Law Association. He volunteered for a long time with the Quincy, Massachusetts, Public Schools and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). Slater died at age 73 on April 21, 2009, at his home in Randolph.
