Biographical / Historical
This collection consists of sound recordings of many great standards of orchestral/classical music on Shellac that spin at 78rpm. Among the works in the collection are Tchaikovsky’s very-Russian and gushing “Pathetique” Symphony No. 6, waltzes from the “Waltz King” Johann Strauss II, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, which anxiously works under Beethoven’s inescapable influence, and Dvorak’s popular and tuneful “New World” Symphony No. 9, which Victor mistakenly labeled as his Symphony No. 5. Conducting these works are none other than maestri such as the stern Arturo Toscanini, Leopold Stokowski, famous for his orchestration of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue for the 1940 movie Fantasia, and Pierre Monteux, who presided over the riotous premier of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in 1913. One particularly rare recording is Toscanini’s 1942 selection of excerpts from Wagner’s opera Die Gotterdammerung, which only two other libraries hold in the 78 format (Library of Congress and UC Santa Barbara). Another recording of interest is Bruno Walter’s 1938 “Unfinished” Eighth Symphony of Schubert, also held by the two above libraries and the Watkinson. Many albums contain breathtaking cover art, and most have the original pamphlets, containing notes on the music and the composers.
