Biographical / Historical

Gershom Bulkeley (1636-1713) was a noted clergyman, politician, and physician in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Bulkeley, the son of Peter Bulkeley and Grace Chetwoode Bulkeley, graduated from Harvard College in 1655 with a bachelor and master’s in 1658. He became a Fellow and Tutor at Harvard from 1658-1661. Bulkeley went on to practice as a minister in New London, Connecticut before moving to Wethersfield (Conn.) in 1666 to serve as a clergyman at the Congregational Church. Bulkeley became more dedicated to the practice of medicine in 1677 after petitioning the governor of Connecticut to utilize deerskins in medicinal practice. Along with his work as a physician, he wrote political pamphlets espousing monarchist and royalist sentiments such as People’s Right, “Will and Doom,” and Some Seasonable Considerations for the Good of the People (1694). Bulkeley also moved to Glastonbury, Connecticut where he continued to develop his practice in medicine.
