William R. Lawrence papers
Overview
The William R. Lawrence papers consist of letters written by nineteenth-century notable people (including Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Carter Hall, prolific publisher-authors), which were gathered by Lawrence (1829-1856) as an autograph collection. Many autographed items, including portrait images, were placed in individual folders and some items have been commented upon (perhaps by Lawrence). The collection includes the signed letter, dated November 22, 1836, from Elizabeth Barrett Browning to Samuel Carter Hall.

Biographical / Historical
William Roderick Lawrence (1829-1856) was a painter and poet and lifelong resident of Hartford, Connecticut. Born on March 3, 1829, Roderick studied medicine at his father's insistence, but never practiced. Fond of natural history, he found his calling drawing and coloring insects, and went on to illustrate--with great success--a medical book pertaining to blood circulation. A poet himself, he illustrated Lydia Sigourney's "Poems of the Sea." Lawrence died on October 9, 1856 of tuberculosis.
