WW II Letters from London by Quentin Reynolds and Bob Lowe, 1940-09-18 - 1940-11-18
Scope and Contents
Carbon copies and later photocopies of two typescripts of letters to Don [Reynolds], brother of Quentin Reynolds, both of which are highly evocative of the time and place during the London Blitz.
1. Sept. 18, 1940 Lansdowne House, Berkeley Square, London. 2p. signed in type "Bob Lowe" describing from his apartment [which he apparently shared with Quentin Reynolds], the aerial bombardment of London . Also describes daily life around them and the work he, Quentin Reynolds and others are doing as war correspondents. Lowe wrote for Liberty Magazine.
2. September 18, 1940 N.P. 3p. signed in type "Quent" describing what London is like at night during German aerial bombardment. Specifically describes life in bombed neighborhoods, the underground, traveling around London, dining in an underground restaurant while bombs explode above, and viewing from his rooftop the aftermath of German raids which resulted in wreckage and fires around him. A combination of the sang-froid, jaunty lightheartedness, fatalism and denial that were employed be productive and survive. Reynolds wrote for Collier's magazine.
