Report of the Committee on Naval Affairs, to whom was referred the memorial of J.W. Simonton, John Whitehead, and others. [Washington, D.C.]
Simonton, Whitehead et al purchased the island of Key West, Florida in 1821 from Juan P. Salas,who had been granted it by the Spanish Government in 1816 prior to Florida's purchase by the U.S. Simonton suggested that Key West would make a good naval station, and subsequently, Commodore David Porter established a settlement, built buildings and de facto took control over much of the Island, to the detriment of the memorialists. They seek compensation from the U.S. Government
