Scope and Contents
Handwritten notes/references taken from the Suffolk Museum at Stony Brook regarding the life and work of Hawkins, composer of "Saw Mill" which is considered the first successful American operetta.
An 1829 copy of "Backside O' Albany", a song by Hawkins written in Black dialect and thought to be the first to be performed in blackface.
