Biographical / Historical
Gilpin's was a social club founded in 1926 by thirteen Hartford men; it was named for the subject of the narrative poem "The Diverting History of John Gilpin; shewing, how he went farther than he intended and came safe home again," written in 1782 by William Cowper. The club was disbanded by member agreement in 1991.
