Series III: John F. Burkin Papers, 1916 - 1929
Scope and Contents
This series consists of approximately 43 letters spanning 1916-1929, with the bulk of the correspondence deriving from 1918 when John F. Burkin was enlisted in the United States Army during World War I. Burkin primarily writes to his wife during this period recalling life in Fort Slocum (N.Y.), and in Camp McClellan (Anniston, Alabama).

Biographical / Historical
John F. Burkin; a native of Ohio, enlisted and was recruited by the United States Army in the summer of 1918, and sent to Fort Slocum in New York to await further orders. He arrived at Camp McClellan in Anniston, Alabama where he became a First Sergeant, writing his wife, Evelyn, nearly every day. Burkin never shipped overseas, but spent three months in the army, from August to December, 1918.
