Series IV: Recordings of Birds, 1929
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of photographs, souvenirs, memorabilia, film, lantern slides, maps, and a recording. The bulk of the materials relate to Francis Reeve Cope Jr.'s travels through New Zealand and Fiji Islands during the 1920s, depicting birds, migration, habitats, as well as plant life found in New Zealand. It also contains some oversize lantern slide negatives of Maori. The collection further contains photographs taken by wildlife photographers and ornithologists including Alexander Stanley Wilkinson (1860-1963); caretaker of Kaputi Island (NZ), as well Herbert Guthrie-Smith (1862-1940) and James Edward Thompson (1880-1976).
A substantial number of photographs, slides, and maps depict Francis R. Cope's expedition to New Zealand with his daughter Theodora Cope (Stanwell-Fletcher); currently a student who would continue on to obtain a doctorate in economic botany, and write numerous publications about her travels through the Canadian Artic and Northern Canada. The expedition to New Zealand included trips to the north and south islands, as well as Teuveni, Fiji Islands.
