Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series includes primarily correspondence between Algernon Charles Swinburne and Seymour Stocker Kirkup during the 1860s-1870s, as well as a publication on A. C. Swinburne and the Blake facsimiles of 1868 written in the New York Public Library Bulletin in 1976. Subjects found in the letters deal with spiritualism, art, and Blake’s work as an artist. The letters were collected by Edmund Gosse (1849-1928), which also includes several letters from the British consul at Leghorn, M. Carmichael, relating to Blake. Letters by Kirkup touch upon his friendship with William Blake.
