"Private Register of Official Acts Beginning May 29, 1872", 1872-1880

 Item — Box: 3, Folder: 8

Scope and Contents

1) Register of Services: each entry is numbered (1-1748) and dated (5/29/1872-6/22/1890). The entry includes the part of the service given (e.g. evening prayer, litany, and so forth), the number of the sermon Ferguson used (if applicable), the church at which the service was held and its geographical location, and any additional relevant remarks (e.g. “First service as Rector”).

2) List and Index of Sermons: each entry is numbered (1-324) and dated (11/1869-12/24/1892). The list also includes the subject/title of the sermon (e.g. “Vigilance”), the date when it was written, the Biblical text drawn upon, and the number of occasions upon which the sermon was preached. Subsequently, Ferguson included an index of sermons arranged for Sundays and for festivals of the year. A miscellaneous list follows this; it includes the numbers of sermons Ferguson used on certain key themes (e.g. Christian life).

3) Register of Baptisms: each entry is numbered (1-58) and dated (8/18/1872-12/4/1879). Each entry includes the place of baptism, the name of the baptized person, and his or her name, surname, age, parents’ names, and sponsors’ names.

4) Register of Marriages: entries include date of marriage, place of marriage, names of persons, residence of persons, age of persons, signature of Ferguson, signature of witness(es), and fee remitted.

5) Register of Burials: each entry is numbered (1-36) and dated (4/27/1873-2/13/[1882]). The deceased’s name, age, whether he or she was baptized, confirmed or was a communicant, his or her residence, date of death, cause of death, and place of burial are enumerated.

6) Register of Confirmed: each entry is numbered (1-54) and dated (4/10/1873-1/4/1880). Similarly, each entry includes the name of the confirmed person, his or her age, the place of confirmation, and the name of the presiding bishop.

7) Communicants Register: includes names and when each person was a communicant (for the most part, Ferguson kept a biweekly log).

8) Students of the Holy Communion: includes names and occasions on which person received Communion.

9) Register of Offerings: includes amounts collected; entries are dated by day and by month but not by year.

10) Journal: entries are from 1860; these two pages appear to be either expenditures or accounts receivable. This segment is located near the end of the register. Perhaps the register was originally used for other purposes.

11) Miscellaneous: closing out Ferguson’s private register is a series of notes that include a list of parishioners who attended services on several occasions in 1880, collections received in the fall of 1878, and hymns that Sunday Schoolers practiced in February, 1879.
